Pelvic Ultrasound Scans
Pelvic Ultrasound Scans and Gynaecological Scans
Most of the Gynaecological and Pelvic ultrasound scans at the Brayford Studio Lincolnshire are performed either trans- abdominally or in conjunction with the Trans-vaginal approach. Almost all examination are performed using 2D ultrasound scan. However we are using a state of the art 3D Endovaginal probe which enable the unique and thorough inspection and examination of all femal pelvic organs. This include examination of the cervix, uterus both ovaries and both Fallopian tubes. Pelvic swellings, masses, bleeding or fluid collection are seen and assessed.
Bladder wall thickness as well as bladder capacity are also examined during Pelvic ultrasound scan examination. Post- micturion residual is also noted. Examination of the upper urinary tract i.e, both kidneys and ureters is also included in this 2D ultra sound scan examination. Renal cysts, renal and adrenal malignancies are also seen.
Another modality of our ultrasound examination is the colour blood flow power doppler measurements of uterine and ovarian blood vessels. This is important in diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of obstetrics and gynecological conditions including malignancy.
Ultrasound scan both 2D and preferably 3D is performed in the following circumstances:
1 - Early pregnancy problems
This includes threatend, missed and inevitable miscariages, and most importantly the diagnoses of ectopic pregnancy.
2 - A missed or displaced intra- uterine contraceptive device, IUCD or coil,
Ultrasound scan is the ideal investigation for localisation of the IUCD.
3 - Pelvic inflammatory disease
Including sexually transmited disease, Chlamydia Trachomatis.
4 - Abdominal pain
Lower abdominal and pelvic pain may be investigated with 2D & 3D ultrasound scan This may help to find out the reason for the pain. The cause of vaginal bleeding and the presence of pelvic masses such as ovarian masses, ovarian cysts, fibroids or endometrioses may be confirmed. The possiblity of malignancy is also assessed.
5 - Dysfunctional uterine and vaginal bleeding
May be due to fibroids, endometrioses or chronic pelvic inflammatory disease. This can be diagnosed with the 2D & 3D ultrasound scan examination.
6 - Pre, Peri - and Post menopausal bleeding
2D Ultrasound is traditionally used for measurements of endometrial thickness and endometrial morphology studies . This is helpful for the diagnosis of endometial polyps, fibroids as well as endometrial malignancy.
At Brayfrod Studio we currently use the state of the art 3D transvaginal probe for a detailed examination of female pelvic organs. Colour power doppler studies is used to assess either the rate of growth of uterine fibroids or the possibility of ovarian malignancy.
7 - Infertility, Subfertility and Amenorrhea
Polycystic ovarian disease; studying the morphology of ovaries and the endometrium especially using our 3D Transvaginal probe will fascilitate the diagnosis of possible causes of infertility in women. Measurement of follicular (Ovarian) size i.e, follicular tracking either in spontaneous or induced ovarian cycle as with in- vetro fertilisation, IVF, in assisted conception. 3D endovaginal probe is ideally suited for this and provide reliable and accurate assessment.
8 - Ovarian Cancer Screening
Women at increased risk of developing ovarian cancer may benefit of annual ultrasound scan screening. This may be performed with the routine 2D scan or preferably with the new 3D transvaginal ultrasound scan. Ovarian screening is also recommended for women with history of assisted conception and ovulation induction in the treatment of infertility. Women who have been taking continuously Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) for 10 year or more, should have ovarian screening. This 3D scan may be combined with a blood test for CA125.
